Knights in Action: A Day of Fraternity, Service, and Gratitude in Downtown Detroit

This morning, members of our Knights of Columbus came together at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in downtown Detroit for a truly special and heartwarming pop-up barbecue. What started as a simple idea—to serve a hot meal—turned into something much greater: an experience of fraternity, service, and genuine human connection.

Side by side, brother Knights worked the grills, prepared food, and served our guests with smiles, dignity, and respect. The line stretched down the block, but so did the spirit of generosity. Every plate served was more than just a meal—it was a reminder that someone cares, that someone sees you, and that you are not forgotten.

What stood out most was not just the efficiency or organization of the event, but the joy that filled the air. There is something powerful about giving—about stepping outside of ourselves and serving others. Time and again, we were reminded that the greatest reward is not what we receive, but what we give.

This is what the Knights of Columbus is all about:

  • Fraternity — brothers working together with purpose
  • Charity — serving those in need with compassion
  • Unity — coming together to make a difference
  • Patriotism — honoring the dignity of every person

Events like this don’t just impact those we serve—they transform us as well.

We encourage every Knight to get involved. Whether it’s helping cook, serve, organize, or simply showing up, your presence matters. There are many more events coming up, and this is your opportunity to be part of something meaningful. I would like to aknowledge all the Kinghts that came and served: Dennis, Donovan, Dan, Edgar, Chris D, Mike M, Kevin, Joe, Glenn and Grand Knight Ed Bahoura.

“With gratitude and love, we honor the dignity of every person we serve.”

I have to say, in addition to what our worthy Grand Knight said above, this popup BBQ lunch was made extra special for the guests there by the extra effort that Ed put into the food. Ed provided not just hot dogs and regular buns, but instead he brought big, delicious beef franks and fresh bread rolls that he and brother Chef Kevin Enright hand-cut into buns. They also hand-cut fresh Bolillo rolls into buns and sautéed many pounds of fresh onions and sweet peppers into a colorful medley for topping the hot dogs. They topped it off with hot cheese sauce and coney meat sauce that made an especially delicious and colorful sandwich! They put a lot of extra effort and detail into this BBQ that the guests really appreciated very much and said so often. All of the Knights there worked so well together with such great efficiency and love. There was a lot of laughter and good will. So well done, thank you!!
